The TGR AK-47 (SAR-1) Upgrade Project

E-mail Print PDF

I have recently purchased a nice condition Romanian SAR-1 AK47 style rifle. I know where it came from and I know it works well so my mind has immediately turned to what can I do to make this a better rifle. I see the AK47 pattern as an excellent platform to build upon so I've done a little web browsing and I've done a little magazine reading and I've come up with several accessories that I can see as being an improvement over the stock rifle.

Here is what I have been thinking, why don't I let the members (and lurkers) of TacticalGearReview.com (TGR) help me out in deciding on how to tacticize this new rifle. I'm going to throw out a few of the items I've got my eye on, leave it open for comment and suggestions for a little while and then I'm going to let the members vote to decide on what the first improvement to this rifle is going to be. I'll obtain that item, test it, and review it here on TGR. Then we can vote on the next one and so on and so forth until this rifle is properly accessorized.

So without further delay here are a few of the items I've had my eye on. Please leave me your comments and any suggested additions to the list so we can get ready for stage 1 of the voting.

Poll is at the left, go ahead and vote for the first upgrade for this rifle or click "Read More" to read the whole article with descriptions and pictures of all the upgrades.

UltiMAK AK "scout" mount Model M1-B

(I'm leaning away from putting any optics on this rifle so someone would really have to convince me of this one - Monty)

UltiMAK M1-B-- A rock-solid platform for your premium optics. With the increasing popularity of the AK based rifles in three gun competitions, the need for a handy, light, completely reliable high speed sighting system has resulted in the UltiMAK M1-B optic mount. Its Picatinny style rail is positioned well below the iron sight axis, making this the lowest optic mount available for the AK. With a tubular sight mounted low, you will be able to use your optic without a comb riser and still use your regular hold. The system allows for co witnessing (the ability to use your iron sights right through a 1x sight as a back-up sighting system) when used with a tubular reflex sight. This heavy duty mount replaces the original steel gas tube and upper handguard, so it adds less than one ounce to the weight of the rifle, making it by far the lightest optic mount installation in the world. The forward positioning of the optic gives you faster, easier and more natural targeting while maintaining your full field of view. Multiple target or moving target engagements, with both eyes open, become second nature.

Safety Lever

Krebs ENHANCED AK SELECTOR LEVER

While the standard AK selector lever is well designed for the function it performs, it 's operation does require the shooter to remove the firing hand from the pistol grip. The Krebs Custom AK selector lever allows for manipulation of the selector while maintaining the shooting hand in firing position, as well as provides a notch for locking back the bolt for inspection. A one for one replacement of the OEM part.

Nearly Eliminates Muzzle Flash; Improves Accuracy. The most advanced design available for reducing or nearly eliminating all the muzzle flash on military caliber rifles or carbines. Will not loosen under heavy fire and helps align exiting barrel gas to improve accuracy.

Magazine Release

AK-47 Tactical Magazine Release

This new magazine release is smaller and more attractive, plus it is less likely to become snagged on brush when used in the field. In addition to a revised design, these all steel parts are now hardened to ensure greater integrity.

Strong and simple ambidextrous magazine release that really works! A natural evolution of the AK-47 magazine release. Dramatically decreases magazine change times by allowing a quick mag drop with the trigger finger while keeping the stong hand on the pistol grip. Effective for competitive shooting or any circumstance that requires reduced magazine change time. Mag release comes with black phosphate finish, is pre-drilled, and is ready to attach to your existing magazine release. Unit comes complete with instructions.

Well that should be enough to get us started, let me know what you think and any other suggestions you may have. In about a week I'll set up the poll and you can vote for the first tactical accessory for this rifle.

Poll is at the left, go ahead and vote for the first upgrade for this rifle.

If you want to discuss this in the forum I've set up a thread just for this SAR1 Upgrade Project Thread

Thanks!

Monty

Instead of the Ultimak rail system, take a look at UTG... they have a quad rail handguard that is under $100 and works VERY well...

I have it on my SAR-1 along with the Tapco M4 collapsible stock.

Monty,

Take the trick-out money, buy ammo and shoot it as is, it is just about perfect, for what it is, now.

All the crap you add will just make it weigh more, harder to work, less dependable and more prone to breakage.

Yeah but if I do that who is going to want to come by and read about it?

Weight - other than the flash hider and the tactical mag release, I don't see anything on there that would really add weight
Hard to work - the sight upgrades should make it easier to work, same with the upgraded safety and mag release, don't see anything complicating anything
Less Dependable and more prone to breakage - don't see anything in that area either except maybe the tapco folding stock. It could be a weak link although when I played with one at the last show I thought the lockup was very solid and it impressed me as an adequately designed piece of equipment although I do recognize it as the first part that could give me issues.

I am going to take your suggestion and upgrade the ammo and mag supply before I do anything else.

Appreciate the comments!

Monty,

Don't invest a lot of money into EITHER of the sight upgrades listed!

The forward peep sight DOES NOT WORK WELL!

The M1903 Springfield had that sight system.

The M1917 was not really designed by us, but DID NOT have that sight system.

The M1 Garand, the M1903A3 rifle, the M1 Carbine, the M14 rifle and the M16 and later rifles in this series all had the peep sight much closer to the eye, where it belongs.

You are going to gain very little and maybe loose in the process (depending on how much the area around the peep covers up) by installing EITHER of these sights in the normal sight location for the AK series.

The older you (and your eyes are) the less the forward peep sight will help.

I spent a good deal of time last night and most of what I read agreed with you, that the peep sight was too far forward to be of much benefit. This set up though I didn't see anything except for high praise.

To use you just dot the i. Seems pretty simple, easy to see for older eyes, tritium front dot so you can see it at night. Isn't cheap at $120 but that's less than an optics set up and don't have to worry about the batteries

By the way, the text on the buttons is still hard to read on the monitor I am using tonight, not near as much contrast at the one I was looking at earlier, I'll dig into that code and find a way to make them better.

Thanks, Monty

Monty,

Is that the Ashley Big Dot system, or something close to it?

I have talked to people who have tried it.

It speeds sighting up some at close range.

It also works at night, like a shotgun if you only have the front sight night module, better if you have the rear sight night module too.

On the other hand, they universally report that it is a 150 to 200 yard sight at the outer limit, the Big Dot front covers WAY too much at any longer distances, meaning you can't get a good, honest bead on a person past the 150 - 200 yd. distance.

This means you are giving up the next 150 yards (200 yds. out to 350 yds.) that the rifle and the M43 cartridge is usually good for.

What is badly needed, and what I have not yet seen in a workable form, is a good, rear mounted receiver sight on a stable, but removable and replaceable without zero loss, action cover.

THAT would turn the AK into much more of a rifle.

Yeah, that's the Ashley XS Big Dot. Tritium up front, plain line on the rear, just dot the i. It is a trade off but so it the rifle. Most sights that allow you to shoot faster aren't as easy to shoot as accurately at longer range...the red dots being a prime example of that. The dots that are big enough to see quickly cover up too much of the target. Of all the options I have looked at it seems to be the most attractive if I'm not going to put some kind of red dot on it.

Maybe, but if that is what it really looks like (Tech Sight) then I doubt it.

I am NOT impressed with Tech sights and what I am hearing of them says they are NOT return to zero sights when you take them off to get into the action (SKS) though they ARE getting a good rep on the 10/22 in Appleseed LTR use.

I would be more interested in something more like the M1/M14 sight mounted there, but I can't think how to make it return to zero when the receiver cover is lifted.
